This project is roughly based on other architect residential developments such as Hudson Woods, although this project is smaller and siteless. It's meant to be a low-maintenance house which is durable and energy efficient, using one side as its main indoor-outdoor interface. This house's design features originate in the Hamptons, where one can spend part of the year living indoor-outdoor with lift-and-slide doors opening to create a larger living room that is partially outside, but the house could be located in any climate zone.
These are the basic specifications:
1. Construction: Prefabricated Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) over glulam or parallam moment timber frame. slab-on-grade with insulation and wood floor. Double or triple-glazed windows. Metal standing seam roof. Cedar vertical board and batten siding. Mechanical: heat pump mini split systems. Fiberglass parallelogram swimming pool.
2. Size: 1,000 square feet, 2 bedrooms, 1 bath + 1 wc, shared kitchen/living/dining space (this is roughly based on the house I renovated and live in Sag Harbor), integrated storage in millwork.
The design is meant to make th emost out of a single volume, where a diagonal gable intersection creates an opportunity to open up the interior to the exterior, using glazing.
